Your Guide to SA 2010 : USA

United States of America

FIFA Ranking : 14

Though their qualifying was never a question of doubt, finishing first in their zone qualifiers has instilled a sense of confidence in a team that boasts of youth and experience. A decent 3-1 victory over Australia in a recent friendly reflects the same. After a second place finish in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009, a bright World Cup Campaign is expected from the Stars and Stripes.

The Manager

After a dismal group stage exit in Germany in 2006, the United States Soccer Federation had promised the fans a big name, but went ahead with homegrown Bob Bradley instead. So far he has successfully justified their choice.

The Squad

Goalkeepers:

Tim Howard,Brad Guzan,Marcus Hanhemann

Defenders:

Jonathan Spector, Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Steve Cherundolo, Jonathan Bornstein, Jay DeMerit, Clarence Goodson

Midfielders:

Michael Bradley, DaMarcus Beasley, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Stuart Holden, Ricardo Clark Francisco Torres, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber

Forwards:

Hercules Gomez, Edson Buddle, Jozy Altidore, Robby Findley

Man to watch:

Landon Donovan

Landon Donovan who has performed heroics for his country time and again, is the holding force of the team. The 28 year old, all time leader in scoring and assists for the USA, can be dangerous from absolutely anywhere in the attacking third. With a young fast strike force, we can see him feeding the forwards from an attacking midfield position. With Clint Dempsey at his side, they form a force to reckon with.

FP Prediction:

Being placed in what is being called the 'easy' group along with England, Algeria and Slovenia, USA shouldn't find themselves embarrassed. In fact USA can even give England a tough challenge to finish as group-leaders. This is a team that on its day can knock any team out. This is something that Spain learnt the hard way in the FIFA 2006 Confederations Cup Semi-Final. Do not underestimate them is all that we say.
